Join us in honouring Indigenous Peoples on Orange Shirt Day
Beyond the Orange Shirt Story
Orange Shirt Day takes place on September 30th every year to teach the message that Every Child Matters. Whether you attended Residential School or an American Indian* Boarding School, you matter. If you are a family member of someone who attended, you matter! To the children who did not make it home, your story matters. Every Child Matters.
The Story Behind Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad. When Phyllis was six-years-old, she was taken to Residential School in British Columbia, Canada, with a brand new orange shirt that her granny had purchased for her. Phyllis was so excited to wear her new shirt on her first day of school. Upon arrival at the school, her shirt was taken away, never to be returned to her. Phyllis recalls feeling like she did not matter.
Every September 30th, we wear orange shirts to honour Phyllis, Survivors, their families, and the children who did not come home.
